"Nothing in this world is certain except for Death and Taxes"
- Benjamin Franklin
Why do I need a will?
Dying without a Will – known as intestacy – can be as painful as it sounds for those you leave behind. Not only is it likely to lead to delays and unnecessary expense, at the worst possible time, in dealing with your ‘Estate’(money, property and belongings) but potentially could result in outcomes that you would neither have wished for nor expected.
Complex family and financial circumstances—arising from the likes of second marriages and relationships, children from previous relationships, high property values, inherited wealth and ownership of properties abroad– plus later in life worries over Inheritance Tax liabilities and the possible burden of Nursing or Care Home fees are increasingly commonplace.
Death and Taxes are sometimes citied as the only two certainties in life BUT by having a WILL you can ensure that it is YOU and not the Law who decides:-
• Who will inherit your ‘Estate’
• Who will be the person or people who manage your affairs after your death
• Who will act as Guardians of any young children who survive you
Even if you have already made a Will it is worth reviewing from time to time to ensure that that all provisions are up to date and relevant to your current life circumstances.
Living Wills and Advance Decision Notices can be useful both to record your wishes in regards to decisions on medical treatment and to nominate a person who must be consulted in specified circumstances.
